Compare mapped nightlife around Madrid stay areas

The short answer

For fewer mapped nightlife venues, look at the Prado, Royal Palace, Atocha or Retiro anchors: each maps 4 or fewer bars, pubs and nightclubs within 250 m, against 31 at Puerta del Sol and 23 at Gran Vía. Suits stays built around museums, trains or park walks. Skip it if you want evening venues at the door. The catch: counts are mapped venues, not measured noise.

1. Puerta del Sol

Square, Madrid, High noise risk, Metro 1 min, 30 hotels

Puerta del Sol maps 17 bars, 9 pubs and 5 nightclubs within 250 m, the highest count here and a high risk on our scale. Its south-east ring sample reaches 66 venues, while the south sample shows 21. Carretas metro is 37 m away, a 1-minute walk.

2. Gran Vía

Street, Madrid, High noise risk, Metro 2 min, 30 hotels

Gran Vía maps 12 bars, 1 pub and 10 nightclubs within 250 m, 23 in total and a high risk on our scale. The north ring sample shows 50, while the west sample shows 4 and the south-west sample 5. Gran Vía metro is 108 m away, a 2-minute walk.

3. Museo del Prado

Landmark stay, Madrid, Low noise risk, Metro 9 min, 17 hotels

The Prado anchor maps 1 bar, 2 pubs and no nightclubs within 250 m, 3 in total and a low risk on our scale. The west ring sample shows 44, so the count changes quickly nearby. The nearest mapped metro, Atocha impares, is 517 m away, a 9-minute walk.

4. Palacio Real de Madrid

Landmark stay, Madrid, Low noise risk, Metro 7 min, 11 hotels

The Royal Palace anchor maps 2 bars and 2 pubs within 250 m, 4 in total and a low risk on our scale. The south-east ring sample shows 59 and the east sample 36, while the west sample shows 0. Ópera is 382 m away, a 7-minute walk.

5. Estación de Atocha

Metro station, Madrid, Low noise risk, Metro 1 min, 11 hotels

Atocha maps 3 pubs and no bars or nightclubs within 250 m, a low risk on our scale. Its west ring sample shows 12, while the other ring samples show 6 or fewer. The Renfe stop is 16 m away, a 1-minute walk from the anchor.

6. Parque del Retiro

Landmark stay, Madrid, Low noise risk, Metro 10 min, 0 hotels

Retiro maps no bars, pubs or nightclubs within 250 m, and no ring sample shows more than 1. The catch is that no hotels are mapped within 500 m, so this is a park-side reference point, not a stay area. Ibiza metro is 578 m away, a 10-minute walk.

Reading the mapped counts

Within 250 m of each anchor, OpenStreetMap maps 31 venues at Puerta del Sol, 23 at Gran Vía, 4 at the Royal Palace, 3 at the Prado, 3 at Atocha and 0 at Retiro. Counts include bars, pubs and nightclubs. They show where venues are mapped, not how loud a room is, and a count cannot say which way a window faces.

Puerta del Sol and Gran Vía suit visitors who want evening venues close by. The Prado, Royal Palace and Atocha suit visitors who want fewer mapped venues. Skip Puerta del Sol and Gran Vía if you want few venues nearby, and skip Retiro as a base, because no hotels are mapped there.

Why ring samples matter

Each anchor also has eight compass samples 400 m out, each counting venues within 250 m. They are measurement points, not named streets. At the Prado the east sample shows 0 while the west sample shows 44, and at the Royal Palace the west sample shows 0 while the south-east sample shows 59.

That spread is the catch for the lower-count anchors. A low figure at the anchor does not carry to every block around it. Hotels are listed within 500 m of each anchor, such as Hotel Europa, 79 m from Puerta del Sol, and Central Palace Hostal, 214 m from the Royal Palace. Names are as tagged, not verified.

Walking and terrain context

Walking minutes are estimates from the anchor, using a 1.3 detour factor and 80 m a minute, not routed journeys from a hotel. Nearest mapped metro stops are 16 m from Atocha, 37 m from Puerta del Sol, 108 m from Gran Vía, 382 m from the Royal Palace, 517 m from the Prado and 578 m from Retiro.

Terrain is the sampled elevation range, not a route climb. The range is 36 m at Puerta del Sol, 37 m at Gran Vía, 33 m at the Prado, 60 m at the Royal Palace, 48 m at Atocha and 20 m at Retiro. The Royal Palace has the widest sampled range, so check a map for slopes before choosing a base there.

How we compared

We took each anchor's point from the dependency facts, then counted mapped bars, pubs and nightclubs within 250 m using OpenStreetMap through Overpass on 13 October 2026. Eight ring samples 400 m from each anchor use the same 250 m count. Walking minutes use a 1.3 detour and 80 m a minute. Elevation comes from Copernicus DEM via Open-Meteo. We did not measure sound, rate any hotel or contact any property.

  • Night-noise risk counts places tagged as bars, pubs and nightclubs in OpenStreetMap within 250 m: low under 8, medium from 8 or with any nightclub, high from 25 or with 3 nightclubs. It counts mapped venues; it does not measure sound.
  • Walking times take the straight-line distance, add 30% for the street network and assume 80 m a minute, rounded up. They are estimates, not routes.
  • Climb is the spread between the highest and the lowest sampled point. Terrain models average the ground into cells, so a few metres either way are within their error.

Questions and answers

Which Madrid anchor maps the fewest nightlife venues?

Retiro maps none within 250 m, but no hotels are mapped within 500 m. Among anchors with hotels, Atocha and the Prado map 3 each and the Royal Palace maps 4, all a low risk on our scale.

Does a low count mean a room will be free of noise?

No. The count is a mapped-venue proxy, not measured sound. The Prado's west ring sample shows 44 venues, so nearby blocks can differ sharply from the anchor, and room position still matters.

How do Puerta del Sol and Gran Vía compare for evenings?

Puerta del Sol maps 31 venues and Gran Vía 23 within 250 m, both a high risk on our scale. Gran Vía's samples range from 4 to 50, so the count varies a lot between nearby points.
