Madrid bases for first-timers: six mapped areas compared
The short answer
Choose Gran Vía or Las Letras for a first Madrid stay if you want 30 mapped hotels within 500 m and sights on foot; choose Prado or Atocha for museums and rail with only 3 mapped venues within 250 m. Skip Retiro as a base: no hotel is mapped within 500 m. The catch: venue counts are a mapped proxy, not measured noise.

1. Gran Vía
Gran Vía for a short metro walk
OpenStreetMap maps 30 hotels within 500 m of the Gran Vía anchor. Gran Vía metro is 108 m away, an estimated 2-minute walk. The catch is nightlife: 23 bars, pubs and nightclubs sit within 250 m, flagged high on our proxy scale, so ask which way a room faces.
2. Plaza de Santa Ana
Las Letras for evenings on foot
Plaza de Santa Ana has 30 mapped hotels within 500 m, the nearest 59 m away, and the nearest mapped station, Cercanías, is 286 m off at 5 minutes. It also has the densest nightlife in this set: 65 mapped venues within 250 m.
3. Museo del Prado
Prado for museum mornings
The Prado anchor has 17 mapped hotels within 500 m, the nearest 199 m away, and only 3 venues within 250 m. The nearest mapped metro, Atocha impares, is 517 m off at 9 minutes. Ring samples to the west and south-west hold 44 and 36 venues.
4. Palacio Real de Madrid
Royal Palace for the western side
The Palacio Real anchor has 11 mapped hotels within 500 m, the nearest 214 m away, and 4 venues within 250 m. Ópera is 382 m off at 7 minutes. Sampled elevation spans 592 to 652 m, the widest range of the six.
5. Estación de Atocha
Atocha for rail connections
Atocha has 11 mapped hotels within 500 m, the nearest 144 m away, and the nearest mapped station entry, Renfe, is 16 m from the anchor at 1 minute. Only 3 venues sit within 250 m, though the sampled ground ranges from 613 to 661 m.
6. Parque del Retiro
Retiro as a park, not a base
No hotel is mapped within 500 m of the Retiro anchor, and the park has no mapped bars, pubs or nightclubs within 250 m. The nearest metro, Ibiza, is 578 m off at 10 minutes. Treat it as a day visit from a base elsewhere.
How to choose between the six areas
Count the mapped hotels first. Gran Vía and Las Letras each show 30 within 500 m, Prado 17, and Royal Palace and Atocha 11 each. Retiro shows none, so it cannot serve as a base on this evidence. A larger count means more mapped options, not a better stay.
Then match the area to your first-day plan. Prado and Atocha put museums and rail within a few minutes of the anchor. Gran Vía and Las Letras put you among mapped venues and sights. The Royal Palace sits on the western edge of the set, with a 7-minute estimate to Ópera.
Nightlife counts and sampled slopes
Nightlife here is a mapped-venue proxy: bars, pubs and nightclubs within 250 m of each anchor. Las Letras has 65, Gran Vía 23, Royal Palace 4, Prado 3, Atocha 3 and Retiro 0. These are counts, not measured noise, and they say nothing about a particular room or street.
Terrain is the sampled elevation range around each anchor, not a route climb. Retiro spans 656 to 676 m and Las Letras 657 to 680 m, while the Royal Palace spans 592 to 652 m, so its ring samples differ most in height. Check the approach to a specific hotel on a map.
Who should skip which area
Skip Las Letras and Gran Vía if the venue counts worry you; ask a hotel which way its rooms face. Skip Retiro if you need a hotel within walking distance of the anchor. Skip the Royal Palace if you want the shortest estimate to a metro entry.
The catch across all six is the evidence. Anchors are single points, walks are estimates rather than routed journeys, and hotel names, addresses and stars are as tagged in OpenStreetMap, not verified. Confirm rooms and terms with each hotel.
How we compared
Each area uses one anchor point. Hotels are those tagged in OpenStreetMap within 500 m of it. Walking minutes multiply straight-line distance by 1.3 and assume 80 m a minute, so they are estimates from the anchor, not routed journeys. Nightlife counts bars, pubs and nightclubs within 250 m. Elevation comes from Copernicus DEM via Open-Meteo, sampled at the anchor and eight compass points 400 m away. Ring samples are not named streets.
- Night-noise risk counts places tagged as bars, pubs and nightclubs in OpenStreetMap within 250 m: low under 8, medium from 8 or with any nightclub, high from 25 or with 3 nightclubs. It counts mapped venues; it does not measure sound.
- Walking times take the straight-line distance, add 30% for the street network and assume 80 m a minute, rounded up. They are estimates, not routes.
- Climb is the spread between the highest and the lowest sampled point. Terrain models average the ground into cells, so a few metres either way are within their error.
Questions and answers
Which Madrid area has the most mapped hotels?
Gran Vía and Las Letras each have 30 hotels mapped within 500 m of their anchors. Prado follows with 17, then the Royal Palace and Atocha with 11 each. Retiro has none mapped within 500 m.
Which area has the fewest mapped bars and pubs?
Retiro has 0 bars, pubs and nightclubs within 250 m of its anchor. Prado and Atocha each show 3, and the Royal Palace shows 4. Las Letras has 65, so it is the densest by this proxy.
How far is the nearest metro from each anchor?
Estimated walks from the anchor are 1 minute at Atocha (16 m), 2 at Gran Vía (108 m), 5 at Las Letras (286 m), 7 at the Royal Palace (382 m), 9 at Prado (517 m) and 10 at Retiro (578 m). They are not hotel-to-metro journeys.
Do the elevation figures show how steep the walks are?
No. They are the lowest and highest sampled heights around each anchor, from 592 m at the Royal Palace's west ring to 680 m in Las Letras. They do not describe the gradient of any street or route.
