The short answer

Hotels near Colosseum Rome sit on two sides of the amphitheatre, and the side matters more than the distance. Book on the Celio, on Via Capo d'Africa, if you want residential streets and San Clemente round the corner. Book at Largo Corrado Ricci or lower Via Cavour if you want Monti's restaurants and the Line B metro on your doorstep. Skip the area if your evenings are in Trastevere or around Piazza Navona: Navona is 31 minutes on foot and Trastevere is further.

Who it suits, who should skip it

Good for

  • First-time visitors who want to walk to the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine without transport
  • Travellers arriving at Termini, two stops away on Line B
  • Early risers who want to be at the Colosseum or Forum entrance before the tour groups

  • Travellers with heavy bags who would rather not walk uphill: the Celio and Colle Oppio sides climb from the piazza

Where to stay in Rome near the Colosseum: the verdict

For sleep, book on the Celio side. Hotel Lancelot at 452 m and Hotel Capo d'Africa at 472 m are both on Via Capo d'Africa, a residential street climbing south-east from the amphitheatre, and Profumo Maison d'Hotes at 442 m is on Via di San Giovanni in Laterano, a few steps from the Basilica di San Clemente. All three are about 8 minutes on foot from the Colosseum. The south and south-west samples, on the Celio and towards Via di San Gregorio, count no mapped bars at all within 250 m.

For evenings out and transport, book on the Monti side instead. Hotel Romano at 465 m and Hotel Richmond at 467 m are on Largo Corrado Ricci, at the corner of the Forum, and a row of mapped hotels lines Via Cavour, where Colosseo and Cavour metro stations are both close by. Piazza della Madonna dei Monti, the centre of Monti's restaurant streets, is 531 m from the Colosseum, 9 minutes.

Hotels in Rome close to the Colosseum on the Celio side

Via Capo d'Africa and Via dei Santi Quattro run up the Celio between the Colosseum and the Lateran. The streets are residential, and the south-east sample on this side counts 3 mapped bars within 250 m. Basilica di San Clemente al Laterano is 434 m from the Colosseum, 8 minutes, and the street of the same name runs on east to the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano.

The trade-off is the slope and the metro. Coming back from the Colosseum you walk uphill, and the nearest Line B entrance is on the other side of the piazza. Line C now stops under Via dei Fori Imperiali at Colosseo–Fori Imperiali and runs on to Porta Metronia and San Giovanni, which helps if you are heading east.

Accommodation near the Colosseum in Rome on Via Cavour and Largo Corrado Ricci

Via Cavour holds the largest group of mapped hotels near the Colosseum: Hotel Paba at 427 m, Downtown Accommodation at 457 m, Hotel Centro Cavour at 460 m, Hotel Solis Invictus at 472 m and Grand Hotel Palatino at 476 m, all 7 or 8 minutes on foot. Hotel Perugia, on the narrow Via del Colosseo, is 369 m away, 6 minutes. Behind them, Via Leonina, Via del Boschetto and Via Panisperna are Monti's dinner and bar streets.

Via Cavour is a through road with traffic and buses, so on this side ask for a room at the back or on a higher floor. Largo Corrado Ricci, at the lower end of the street by the Forum, is the closest of the Monti addresses to the Forum entrance and to Line B at Colosseo.

Hotels near Colosseum Rome Italy on Via Labicana

Palazzo Manfredi is the closest mapped hotel to the Colosseum, 265 m away and 5 minutes on foot, at the start of Via Labicana. Hotel Mercure - Delta Colosseo is further down the same road, 476 m and 8 minutes away, further east along the same road.

Via Labicana is the main road east from the Colosseum towards San Giovanni and carries traffic and buses. If a Colosseum view is the reason you are booking, check which side of the building the room faces before you pay; on this road a street-facing room also means traffic.

Getting around from the Colosseum neighborhood in Rome

Colosseo station on Line B is 141 m from the amphitheatre, 3 minutes, opposite it on Via dei Fori Imperiali. Line B runs two stops north to Roma Termini and south to Circo Massimo and Piramide. Since December 2025 Line C has also stopped here, at Colosseo–Fori Imperiali, with an interchange to Line B and a direct run to San Giovanni for Line A. For Fiumicino airport, take Line B to Termini and the Leonardo Express, or Line B to Piramide and the FL1 train from Roma Ostiense; Ciampino airport buses leave from Termini.

The ancient sites are on the doorstep: the Arch of Constantine is 152 m, 3 minutes, the Palatine 485 m, 8 minutes, and the Roman Forum 493 m, 9 minutes. Monti's Piazza della Madonna dei Monti is 531 m, 9 minutes, and San Clemente 434 m, 8 minutes. Further out, the Trevi Fountain is 1,410 m, 23 minutes, and the Pantheon 1,588 m, 26 minutes. Piazza Navona, at 1,864 m, and Trastevere beyond it are the walks where a bus, tram or taxi starts to make sense.

Night noise around the Colosseum

The count around the amphitheatre is low: 2 mapped venues within 250 m, 1 bar and 1 pub, and no nightclubs. The ring samples range from 0 on the south, south-west and west sides, where the archaeological park and the Celio gardens take up the ground, to 5 on the east side towards San Clemente, and 3 on the north side in Monti. These are counts of mapped venues, not measured noise.

The noise that matters near the Colosseum is traffic rather than bars. Via Cavour and Via Labicana are through roads, and the piazza itself fills with tour groups by day. The bars cluster at the Colosseum end of Via di San Giovanni in Laterano and on Monti's streets north of Via Cavour, so a room on Via Capo d'Africa is the furthest from both.

Hills and walking with luggage near the Colosseum

The Colosseum sits in a hollow between hills. The anchor is at 23 m and the sampled ground rises to 56 m on the north-east side, towards the Colle Oppio park, a 33 m range. The Celio sample by Via Annia is at 45 m, so the hotels on Via Capo d'Africa are uphill from the piazza and from the metro.

The Monti side is lower: the north-west sample by Via del Tempio della Pace is at 27 m and the north one at 31 m, and Largo Corrado Ricci and lower Via Cavour are close to the level of the Forum. Walk times in this guide are straight-line estimates at 80 m a minute, so add time for the slopes and the cobbles.
