Hotels Oud West Amsterdam: Which Streets to Book and Skip

The short answer

For hotels Oud West Amsterdam has two good clusters. Book Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat, where Grand Hotel Downtown, Amadi Park Hotel and Hotel Mosaic are 4 to 5 minutes from the centre of Oud-West and Leidseplein is 15. Book Hotel De Hallen or CityHub by Bellamyplein if you want the food hall and market at the door. The catch: there is no metro, the Dam is 30 minutes on foot, and the main roads carry trams all day.

Who it suits, who should skip it

Good for

  • Travellers who want a lived-in neighbourhood rather than the canal-ring crowds: Oud-West is mostly apartment blocks with cafes on the main streets
  • Food-first trips: De Hallen, with the Foodhallen food hall, and Ten Katemarkt are both 5 minutes from the centre of Oud-West
  • Runners and families who want a park close by: the Vondelpark is 12 minutes on foot
  • Museum visitors happy to walk: the Van Gogh Museum is 18 minutes and the Rijksmuseum 20

Skip it if

  • Anyone who wants to walk to the Dam and the old centre: it is 30 minutes, and the Anne Frank Huis 25
  • Travellers who rely on the metro: there is no metro entrance within the search radius, so it is trams and walking
  • Light sleepers booking a street-facing room on Overtoom, Kinkerstraat or Bilderdijkstraat, which carry trams and traffic
  • Visitors who want a big choice of hotels: there are only a handful, so the good rooms go early

Hotels in Oud West Amsterdam: the verdict

Book Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat if you want the shortest walk to Leidseplein and the museums. Grand Hotel Downtown and Amadi Park Hotel are 4 minutes from the centre of Oud-West and Hotel Mosaic 5, all on the same block. From there Leidseplein is 15 minutes on foot and the Van Gogh Museum 18. Huygens Place, further down the same street at numbers 103-107, is 8 minutes away and closer to the Vondelpark.

Book around De Hallen if you want the neighbourhood itself. Hotel De Hallen on Bellamyplein and CityHub Amsterdam on Bellamystraat are 6 minutes from the centre, with De Hallen and Ten Katemarkt both 5. These streets are residential, and the evenings are restaurants and the food hall rather than bars.

The streets to book in Oud-West

The quiet streets are the ones between the tram roads: Bellamystraat, Borgerstraat, the side streets off Ten Katestraat and Jacob van Lennepkade, a canal lined with houseboats. Maison Elle on Anna van den Vondelstraat, 8 minutes from the centre, sits on a small street just north of the Vondelpark.

Jan Pieter Heijestraat is a smaller shopping street running north to south through the district. Hotel Heye 130 is on it, 8 minutes from the centre, on the western side of Oud-West, further from Leidseplein but close to the Vondelpark entrances.

The streets to avoid for a room at the front

Overtoom is a busy through road with trams running west from Leidseplein. Hotel ABBA at Overtoom 118-120 is 7 minutes from the centre and Princess Hostel at Overtoom 80 is 8; on Overtoom, ask for a room at the back.

Kinkerstraat, the shopping street on the north side, and Bilderdijkstraat and Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat on the east side are wide tram streets too. The hotels on Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat are worth it for the location, but a courtyard room is the quieter booking.

Minutes to the sights from Oud-West

From the centre of Oud-West, De Hallen and Ten Katemarkt are 5 minutes, the Vondelpark 12, Leidseplein 15, the Van Gogh Museum 18, the Rijksmuseum 20, the Anne Frank Huis 25 and the Dam 30. Walk times are straight-line estimates with a detour factor, at 80 m a minute.

There is no metro entrance within the 1200 m search radius. Trams run along Kinkerstraat, Overtoom and Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat towards Leidseplein, Museumplein and Centraal station. From Schiphol, trains run to Amsterdam Centraal and Amsterdam Lelylaan, and a direct bus runs to Leidseplein.

Oud West neighborhood Amsterdam at night: where the bars are

The facts count 5 bars and pubs within 250 m of the centre of Oud-West: 2 bars and 3 pubs, and no nightclubs, so the facts put night-noise risk at low. The north ring sample, beyond De Hallen, counts 10 within 250 m, the most of the eight, and the north-east 8; the south sample, towards the Vondelpark, counts 2, the fewest. These are mapped venues, not noise measurements.

So the north-east of the district is where evenings get louder, and the streets towards the Vondelpark have the fewest mapped bars. The real nightlife is at Leidseplein, 15 minutes away across the Singelgracht, which keeps late crowds out of Oud-West.

Walking with luggage in Oud-West

The sampled points range from 3 m to 9 m, a spread of 6 m, so the district is flat and easy to roll a suitcase through. The pavements are shared with a lot of parked bikes, so allow a little extra time on the narrow side streets.

The hotels in this guide are 4 to 8 minutes on foot from the centre of Oud-West. With heavy bags, the tram to the nearest stop on Overtoom or Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat, or a taxi to the door, is simpler than walking from Leidseplein.
