Hotels Baixa Lisbon: Which Streets of the Grid to Book

The short answer

Hotels Baixa Lisbon searches cover 30 mapped hotels within 500 m of Rua Augusta, so pick the street, not the district. Book the southern half of the grid, on Rua do Comércio or Rua da Vitória, or a Rua Augusta room above the shops: flat walks, Praça do Comércio 5 minutes away, Baixa-Chiado metro 4 minutes. Avoid street-facing rooms on Rua dos Fanqueiros and Rua da Madalena, which carry through traffic, and on Rua da Conceição, where trams 12E and 28E run.

Who it suits, who should skip it

Good for

  • First-time visitors who want to walk to Praça do Comércio, Rossio, Chiado and the Sé without a single bus
  • Travellers arriving by metro from the airport, with Baixa-Chiado on the blue and green lines 4 minutes from the centre of the grid
  • Anyone with a wheeled suitcase: the grid itself is flat, unlike Alfama, Bairro Alto or the castle hill
  • Day-trippers using the river ferries, the Cascais line from Cais do Sodré or the Sintra line from Rossio

Skip it if

  • Light sleepers who end up on the tram line: trams 12E and 28E run along Rua da Conceição through the middle of the grid
  • Travellers who want bars outside the door: the late-night streets are uphill in Bairro Alto or down at Cais do Sodré
  • Anyone looking for a residential, local neighbourhood feel: the Baixa is shops, offices and hotels, and Rua Augusta is one of the city's busiest tourist streets
  • Drivers: Rua Augusta, Rua da Vitória and Rua dos Correeiros are pedestrian, and the grid has no hotel car parks in this guide

Where to stay in Baixa Lisbon: the verdict

Book south of Rua da Conceição and off the two traffic streets. The block between Rua da Conceição and Praça do Comércio has the fewest mapped bars in the grid, and the hotels there are close: Andaz Lisbon is 136 m from the anchor, 3 minutes, Pestana CR7 138 m and Vincci Baixa Suites 151 m, all on Rua do Comércio. The Pousada de Lisboa on Praça do Comércio is 216 m away, 4 minutes.

If you prefer the middle of the grid, take the pedestrian streets. My Story Hotel Augusta is 71 m from the anchor and Pestana Rua Augusta 150 m, Hotel Duas Nações on Rua da Vitória is 104 m, 2 minutes, with The 8 on the same street. Whichever you pick, ask for a room on an upper floor: the ground floors are shops and café terraces.

Hotels in Baixa Lisbon on the pedestrian streets: Rua Augusta and Rua da Vitória

Rua Augusta runs straight from Rossio to the arch and Praça do Comércio and is pedestrian along its whole length. In the day it is packed with shoppers, street performers and tour groups; after the shops shut it empties fast, so an upper-floor room here is quieter at night than the crowds suggest. Be Poet Baixa Hotel at Rua Augusta 220 is 220 m from the anchor, 4 minutes.

Rua da Vitória crosses it as a pedestrian street and holds the Baixa-Chiado metro entrance at its western end, 189 m from the anchor. Hotel Duas Nações and The 8 are both on it, within 149 m. One thing to know for both streets: men muttering offers of hashish work the corners of Rua Augusta with Rua da Vitória and Rua de São Nicolau. Police say much of what they sell is pressed bay leaf. Say no and walk on; it is a nuisance, nothing more.

Baixa Chiado Lisbon hotels on Rua Áurea and Rua da Prata

Rua Áurea, still called Rua do Ouro by most Lisboetas, is the western long street and the closest to Chiado. It is open to traffic, a tertiary road in OpenStreetMap, but quieter than the two eastern streets. My Story Hotel Ouro is 97 m from the anchor and Moon & Sun Lisboa 200 m, 2 and 4 minutes, and the Elevador de Santa Justa lift up to Carmo is at its northern end, 301 m away.

Rua da Prata, one block east of Rua Augusta, is partly pedestrian and partly a quiet access street. Hotel da Baixa at number 229 is 231 m from the anchor. For hotels in Baixa Chiado proper, up the hill, Hotel do Chiado on Rua Nova do Almada is 224 m and Palace Chiado 268 m, but note the climb: the west ring sample sits at 53 m, against 22 m at the anchor.

Hotels near Baixa Lisbon: the streets to avoid for sleep

Rua dos Fanqueiros and Rua da Madalena are the grid's through roads, secondary roads in OpenStreetMap, with cars, taxis and buses heading north from the river. Casual Belle Époque, Memória and Esqina Cosmopolitan Lodge are on Rua da Madalena, between 157 m and 221 m away. They are fine for the Sé and Alfama side, but book a room at the back.

Rua da Conceição is the other one. Trams 12E and 28E both run along it between the Sé and Chiado from morning until evening. North of the grid, Rossio and Praça da Figueira are bus and taxi hubs, and Largo de São Domingos next to Rossio keeps late crowds around its ginjinha bars and is another spot where the street sellers gather.

Baixa neighborhood Lisbon: minutes to the sights and the metro

From the anchor at Rua Augusta and Rua da Conceição, the Arco da Rua Augusta is 188 m, 4 minutes, Praça do Comércio 5 minutes and Rossio 8 minutes. The Sé is 368 m, 6 minutes, east across Rua da Madalena. Castelo de São Jorge is 9 minutes and the Miradouro de Santa Luzia 11 minutes as straight-line estimates, but both are uphill, so expect longer. Time Out Market by Cais do Sodré is 14 minutes along the river.

Baixa-Chiado metro, 4 minutes away, serves the blue and green lines. Terreiro do Paço, by Praça do Comércio, is on the blue line, and Rossio on the green. From the airport, take the red line and change at Alameda to the green line for Baixa-Chiado or Rossio. Ferries across the Tagus leave from Terreiro do Paço and Cais do Sodré, Cascais trains from Cais do Sodré and Sintra trains from Rossio station.

Night noise in the Baixa: where the bars are

The grid itself is moderate: 10 bars and 2 pubs are mapped within 250 m of the anchor, and no nightclubs. The ring samples show where it gets louder. The west sample, towards Chiado, counts 18 bars within 250 m and the north-west, towards Rossio, 12, while the south sample by the river counts 1 and the north and south-east 5 each. These are counts of mapped venues, not noise measurements.

So the quiet side is the south and south-east of the grid, towards Praça do Comércio. The late nights happen uphill in Bairro Alto and down at Cais do Sodré, both outside the grid, which means you can go out there and walk back to a calm street.

Accommodation in Baixa Lisbon: walking with luggage

The Baixa is the flat part of central Lisbon. The south ring sample by the river is at 9 m, the anchor at 22 m and the north sample near Rossio at 35 m, so rolling a suitcase between Praça do Comércio, the metro and your hotel is easy on the calçada paving, if bumpy.

Leave the grid and it climbs fast. The north-east sample towards the castle is at 88 m, a 79 m range across the sampled points, and the west sample in Chiado at 53 m. If your hotel is up there, take the Elevador de Santa Justa or the metro rather than dragging bags up the hill. Walk times in this guide are straight-line estimates at 80 m a minute.
