Who it suits, who should skip it

Good for

  • First-time visitors who want the metro at the door: the Baixa-Chiado entrance is 1 minute from the centre of Chiado
  • Travellers who want to walk everywhere in the centre: Rossio is 7 minutes, Praça do Comércio 8 and the Time Out Market 10
  • Cafe and shopping trips: Rua Garrett and the Café A Brasileira are 3 minutes away
  • Couples who want a short walk to the viewpoints: Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara and Miradouro de Santa Catarina are both 11 minutes

Skip it if

  • Light sleepers booking a room facing the Bairro Alto edge: the west and north-west samples count 46 and 62 bars within 250 m
  • Anyone who can't manage hills: the sampled points climb 59 m from the south-east to the north-west
  • Travellers who want a big hotel with a pool: most places here are small hotels and apartments in old buildings

Hotels in Chiado Lisbon: the verdict

Book Rua Ivens or Rua Nova do Almada if you want the most central base in Lisbon. GS Chiado Boutique Studios & Suites on Rua Ivens and Palace Chiado are 1 minute from the centre of Chiado, The Ivens on Rua Capelo 2, and Hotel do Chiado and InSuites Chiado Apartments on Rua Nova do Almada 2. The Baixa-Chiado metro entrance is 1 minute away, so you can reach the metro without climbing.

Book Largo do Carmo or Rua da Trindade if you want to sleep higher up. THE PESSOA on Rua da Trindade and Lisboa Carmo Hotel on Rua da Oliveira ao Carmo are 4 minutes from the centre of Chiado, and Dear Lisbon Bordalo Palace on Largo Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro is 3. Largo do Carmo is 3 minutes away, and the Elevador de Santa Justa takes you down to the Baixa from there.

The streets to book in Chiado

Rua Ivens, Rua Capelo and Rua Nova do Almada are the side streets between Rua Garrett and the Baixa. They carry shoppers by day, have far fewer bars than the Bairro Alto side, and sit right on the metro. Hotel Borges Chiado, 3 minutes from the centre, is on the Rua Garrett side, among the shops and cafes.

Downhill in the flat Baixa, Rua Áurea has a row of hotels 3 to 5 minutes from the centre of Chiado: The 7 hotel, Moon & Sun Lisboa, My Story Hotel Ouro, Tempo FLH Hotels Lisboa and Rossio Plaza Hotel. Book these if you want flat walking to Rossio and the river and don't mind the walk up to Chiado.

The streets to avoid for a room at the front

The western edge of Chiado, along Rua da Misericórdia and around Largo de Camões, borders Bairro Alto, Lisbon's main bar district. InSuites Chiado Apartments II at Rua da Misericórdia 36 and the Bairro Alto Hotel are 4 minutes from the centre; the location is excellent, but ask for a room at the back.

Rua Áurea and Rua Augusta in the Baixa are flat and convenient, but they carry buses, delivery vans and crowds all day. On those streets, a room on a high floor or at the back is the better booking.

Minutes to the sights from Chiado

From the centre of Chiado, the Café A Brasileira and Largo do Carmo are 3 minutes, the Elevador de Santa Justa 4, Rossio 7, Praça do Comércio 8, the Time Out Market 10, and the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara and the Miradouro de Santa Catarina 11. Walk times are straight-line estimates with a detour factor, at 80 m a minute, and they don't include the hills.

The Baixa-Chiado metro station is 1 minute away and serves the Blue and Green lines. Tram 28 passes Largo de Camões, at the top of Rua Garrett.

Chiado neighborhood Lisbon at night: where the bars are

The facts count 12 bars, pubs and clubs within 250 m of the centre of Chiado: 7 bars, 4 pubs and 1 nightclub, a medium night-noise risk. The east sample, towards the Baixa, counts 9 within 250 m and the south-east 4, the fewest of the eight. The west sample counts 46 and the north-west 62, the most. These are mapped venues, not noise measurements.

So the noise in the Chiado neighborhood of Lisbon comes from the west, where Bairro Alto starts. The streets on the Baixa side of Chiado have far fewer mapped bars.

Walking with luggage in Chiado

The sampled points range from 10 m to 69 m, a climb of 59 m. The centre of Chiado is at 50 m, the south-east sample towards the river at 10 m and the north-west sample by Bairro Alto at 69 m. The pavements are polished stone cobbles, which get slippery in the rain.

With bags, take the metro to Baixa-Chiado: the facts put no climb between the station and the centre of Chiado. The hotels on Rua Ivens and Rua Nova do Almada are the easiest to reach with a suitcase; for Carmo and Trindade, a taxi to the door saves the climb.
